About Helmsley

Helmsley is a very pretty small market town on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. It is sited on a bend on the A170 which runs from Thirsk to Scarborough. Helmsley has a spectacular ruined castle which is within five minutes walk of Holly-Garth. The Castle is owned by English Heritage and is well worth a visit. A little further away, but also accessible on foot is Duncombe Park, the seat of the Feversham family, which is open to the public.

North and East of Helmsley

For the keen walkers, the ruins of 12th Century Rievaulx Abbey are just over six miles walk away. The Yorkshire Moors are only a few minutes away by car, with their miles upon miles of walks, beautiful scenery and wildlife. Scarborough, and Whitby are less than an hour's drive away, with their varied attractions ranging from the simple pleasures of the seaside to the quaint and picturesque shopping streets of Whitby and to the spectacular and haunting ruins of Whitby Abbey. For much of the year, you can catch the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at nearby Pickering and travel to Whitby by steam power. Why not stop off at Goathland enroute and see where the ITV series HeartBeat was filmed. Pickering and Kirkbymoorside are well worth visiting. Enjoy their shops and the sights, and why not take afternoon tea or have a spot of lunch while you are there?

The moors villages have much to offer besides their scenery, including the Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole. The museum, with its snapshots of yorkshire village life over the last few thousand years is fascinating for old and young alike, although the village itself is unmissable in its own right.
